More Information on Shuttle Valves for Compressed Air
Shuttle valves are used in compressed air logic circuits to automatically select the higher of two pressures and allow it to be directed into a flow path.
Shuttle valves are shaped like an inverted tee with two inlet ports at either end of the cross bar. The outlet is at the upper end of the tee. Between the two inlet ports is a ball or a poppet that shifts to allow a signal at one inlet to pass to the outlet while blocking the second inlet. The ball is free to move side-to-side, and will move away from the highest pressure allowing it to pass through the valve while blocking the lower pressure.
Shuttle valves are knows as an 'OR' logical element since the only allow one signal OR the other to pass.
